GREENVILLE, N.C. - After enjoying a long holiday weekend, East Carolina returned to its spring schedule by opening its fifth and final week of workouts Monday afternoon on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
The Pirates were also back in full pads for the final time before Saturday's Purple-Gold Game as head coach Scottie Montgomery indicated ECU would conduct a "self-practice" Wednesday and a walk-through on Friday. Wednesday' session is designed to teach specific drills to players in different position groups that can be utilized during unsupervised individual workouts during the summer.
"It was easy to tell we've had a few days off our feet," Montgomery said. "We had a lot of energy and guys were flying around out there in what was a great start to our last week. Jimmy Williams continues to impress offensively, while I thought Justin Brown was really active up front to give our defense a lift."
In addition to its traditional unit and special teams periods, East Carolina stressed an up-tempo pace during an extended 36-minute team-on-team segment that covered blitz pickup, first-and-10, third-and-four, redzone and goal line situations.
NOTES: ECU's offense and defense each had notable performances during the situational work ... After the Pirates' defense made stops on three of four series inside the redzone, the offensive unit responded by punching in five of six snaps on the two-yard line during the goal line session ... DE Kendall Futrell keyed the defensive effort with three tackles for lost yardage, including a sack during the redzone period ... ILB Aaron Ramseur (interception return for TD) and DT Michael Myers (recovered fumble) accounted for a pair of takeaways ... Jimmy Williams snared the longest reception of the day with a 47-yarder from Gardner Minshew before also grabbing a 20-yarder for the offense's only redzone score ... Justin Brown was responsible for a pair of TFLs and plenty of additional pressure at the end position (after opening spring drills on the inside at tackle) ... DE Yiannis Bowden returned to action after missing last Monday's practice because of injury.
