GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU women’s basketball team (12-10, 4-5) welcomes SMU (8-14, 2-7) to Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum this Saturday. The contest is set for 5 p.m. (EST) and will follow the ECU men’s basketball game, which begins at 2 p.m. against Memphis. Tickets for the men’s game are also valid for the women’s game. Fans are encouraged to wear purple for ECU’s annual Paint it Purple game.
ECU has won three of the last four contests, with all three wins coming against teams in the top-six positions of the American Athletic Conference standings. In the last outing, the Pirates trailed Wichita State by 16 points in the third quarter but outscored the Shockers 30-9 in the final frame to secure the comeback victory. ECU is 9-5 when the final margin is under 10 points.
Freshman Ariyana Williams is averaging an ECU team-best 9.9 points per game. Senior Thais Oliveira is second on the team in scoring with 9.3 points per contest. In conference play, junior Salita Greene is averaging team-highs of 8.0 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game. In AAC play Junior Alex Frazier is averaging 7.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists. Frazier joins sophomore Dominque Claytor as the only two Pirates to start all eight conference games.
SMU is coming off a 60-56 home victory over Temple on Jan. 31. On the season, the Mustangs are led by McKenzie Adams who is seventh in the conference in scoring, with 17.5 points per contest. Kiara Perry is the only other Mustang averaging double-figures, with 10.4 points per game.
The Pirates and Mustangs have met 17 times in the series history that dates back to 2006. ECU leads the series 9-8, while ECU head coach Heather Macy holds a 6-5 record against the Mustangs. The Pirates are 4-1 when playing SMU in Minges Coliseum. In the last meeting, SMU defeated ECU 65-51 in Dallas, Texas on Jan. 13, 2018. ECU freshman Ariyana Williams recorded a game-high 19 points.
