Jeff Lebo resigns as ECU head basketball coach

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) - In what is being called a big surprise, East Carolina University is looking for a new head basketball coach.

Jeff Lebo resigned this afternoon. He was in his eighth season at ECU.

Lebo said it was time for him to make a change and a pivot in his life. He said it was a very hard decision for him to make.

Asked about another coaching job, Lebo said that may be something down the road. "I'm leaving that door open," said Lebo. "Right now it's the furthest thing from my thoughts."

Mike Perry, assistant basketball coach, has agreed to be interim coach.

During his first seven seasons, the coach had 114 wins, the second best winning coach during the basketball program's Division I history.

So far this year, the Pirates have won two games out of six this season.

Prior to ECU, Lebo was the head basketball coach at Auburn University. He was fired at Auburn after six seasons.
