Winterville man has rare encounter with a red squid along NC coast

PORTSMOUTH ISLAND, NC (WITN) Winterville resident Carey Walker had a trip to the beach he won't soon forget.

He says he and his fiance, Mary Wuellner, were driving back to the cabins on Portsmouth Island in Carteret County during low tide in March when something caught their eye.

They stopped and came across a red squid that he says was about 35 to 40 pounds.

After taking some pictures and video he says he put it back in the water and didn't see it again.

A check on information about squids on the internet indicates this particular type of squid appears to be a diamond squid and occurs worldwide throughout tropical and subtropical waters.
