BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Residents in Beaufort County will get a chance to hear from city council candidates Thursday night before the municipal elections.
Eleven candidates competing for 5 seats on the Washington City Council will have the chance to meet with residents Thursday night to share views and discuss issues ahead of the elections.
The forum will be hosted by members of Beaufort County Indivisible and the Beaufort County NAACP.
The organizations hope the forum will get more residents informed about the upcoming elections to avoid the low voter turnout they have seen in previous years.
"We've helped people take actions they never thought they would," said Attila Nemecz, the head of Beaufort County Indivisible. "The 2016 election turned out to be such a disaster because of complacency among progressives. We're far more active now. We're talking to each other. We have spent the year learning new political skills. We hope that we can match up some of our members with some of the candidates' campaigns."
The forum will begin at 6 p.m. at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources office at the Washington Square Mall.
