LENOIR COUNTY, NC (WITN) - This week's WITN Teacher of the Week is Mary Riddick, a middle school science teacher at Contentnea Savannah School in Grifton.
Riddick has been teaching for the last 21 years, 19 of those in Lenoir County.
She graduated from Meredith College in 1992 with a BA in English and certification for grades 6-9 in both English Language Arts and Social Studies.
Riddick went on to earn her Masters in Middle Grades Education from ECU in 1999, and has since added both an elementary certification and a middle grades science certification to her name.
She has taught a variety of subjects and grades over the course of her teaching years, most recently teaching science for grades 6-8.
The person who nominated Riddick wrote: “I have had the pleasure of working with for the last three years, as my son has progressed through middle school. She is the teacher that you hope and pray that your child will get. She is aware of each student and their normal behaviors and is able to point out if something is wrong, if they do not feel well, or whatever the case may be. This morning, as I was reflecting on my son moving on to high school in the fall, I found myself emotional because I know that I can no longer reach out to Mrs. Riddick to check in on my son's progress. It is always clear when a teacher is passionate at what they do. I have told her many times over the last few years how much I truly appreciate her, but would love if WITN could award her teacher of the week so that she knows how exceptional that she is, and that she is making a difference in children's lives every single day by doing what she does.”
