WITN's Teacher of the Week: Victoria Newkirk of Charity Middle School

DUPLIN COUNTY (WITN) - This week's WITN Teacher of the Week is Victoria Newkirk, a social studies teacher at Charity Middle School in Duplin County.

A Duplin County native, Newkirk graduated from Wallace-Rose High School in 2010 and went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in Middle Grades Social Studies Education from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Following graduation, Newkirk taught 7th and 8th grade social studies at Fairgrove Middle School in Fairmont before joining the Yellow Jacket family as a Charity Middle School 6th and 7th grade social studies teacher.

Newkirk says teaching is her passion, rivaled only by her love for humanities and geography.

As a teacher, her goal is to create a comfortable learning environment where students are able to share concerns, debate ideas and nurture curiosity to cultivate a love for learning.

The person who nominated Newkirk wrote: “She has been phenomenal in helping my son adjust to the transition from elementary to middle school. She always shows compassion for her students. She's always pleasant when talking with her about anything in her class. My son often comes home and tells all the exciting things she does in class to make Social Studies exciting. I remember when my son first entered middle school this year. The transition was dramatic for him. He would come home with a great deal of anxiety. I would constantly be contacting his teachers. Ms. Newkirk would always assure me that she would assist in helping my son. She was a person of her word. She made him comfortable in her class. As a parent, I felt she should be recognized for her hard work, dedication, and patience toward her students.”
