WITN’s Teacher of the Week: Mr. Mike Jones of Creswell High School

WASHINGTON COUNTY (WITN) - WITN's Teacher of the Week for May 30 is Mr. Mike Jones of Creswell High School in Washington County.

Jones grew up in Creswell and now teaches at the same school he graduated from. He went on to college at Elizabeth City State University to earn his degree in Health and Physical Education. After beginning work at Creswell High School, he attended workshops and summer classes at ECU to earn a degree in science and mathematics.

Jones has been teaching and coaching at Creswell High School for 39 years!

During that time, he has served as a middle grades math and science teacher, health & PE teacher, high school math teacher and a basketball, football, baseball, tennis, and softball coach. He has also received a Golden Apple Award, served as a teacher mentor, and named Creswell High School Teacher of The Year three times. Currently, he is the high school math teacher and the Athletic Director.

Jones is married with two children and enjoys fishing and golf in his spare time.

“I have enjoyed teaching over the years for many reasons,” Jones writes. “We are a small school here at Creswell and the faculty and staff and student body is like a big family. We have small class sizes, and I always try to get to know my students personally. I have always enjoyed coaching, and have found that teaching and coaching can go hand in hand. In both instances, I enjoy watching students work on their weaknesses while at the same time, enhanced their strengths. It still brings me much joy to see the expressions on their faces when they finally get it. Over the years, I’ve found that not many students like math. So as their teacher, I will work hard to get them to respect math and to recognize its value.”

The person who nominated Jones wrote: “He is a gifted teacher who makes the learning fun and relevant. Not only is he a great teacher, he is also the athletic director for the school. He is at every athletic event either coaching or setting up for the game. He is the true example of a hard working and dedicated man. CHS is very lucky to have him on staff and the students are lucky and grateful to have him as a teacher. He has taught both of my daughters and they enjoyed his class and learned a lot. My youngest daughter has him now and is so excited about math for the first time in years.”

Congratulations Mike Jones!
