PITT COUNTY, NC (WITN) - WITN's Teacher of the Week for February 28 is Ginny Collins from Pitt County Early College High School.
Collins currently teaches Earth Science. This is her second year of teaching and her first year at the early college high school. She grew up in Reidsville, NC and graduated from East Carolina University in 2014 with a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Science Education. After graduation, she worked for a college ministry called FUSE before starting her career in teaching.
The students and staff here are great,” Collins writes. “I love the small class sizes and family environment of the school. It It truly allows you to get to know students on a more personal level. I have a great passion for science, and being able to share that with my students is a wonderful thing. We love to have fun and do as many experiments as possible in my class.”
Collins and her husband got married in November of 2016 and have one cat named Murphy.
The person who nominated Collins wrote: “She goes out her way to make her Earth and Environmental Science class entertaining. Mrs. Collins also gets along with all the students and everyone looks forward to attending her class each day. She makes sure that everyone of her students understand the lesson she teaches. Her Earth Science classes as an average scored 80% on their Science NCFE last semester.
She's also tries her best to encourage us each and everyday. With students coming and transitioning to the Early College, it isn't easy. You're going from middle school to high school with a mixture of college classes, so that adds a lot of stress on us. Mrs.Collins motivates us to continue working hard and staying in the program. She also helps us with other problems, she puts herself in our shoes, tries her best to understand it from our perspective and gives us good advice.
It would mean so much if she could win 'Teacher of the Week' because I feel she really deserves it. Mrs. Collins really has a passion for teaching and enjoys coming to school everyday so we can learn. She is one of my role models, I wish to grow up and be the understanding, successful, considerate, and caring person that she is.”
Congratulations Ginny Collins!
Every week during the school year WITN will recognize a Teacher of the Week on WITN News at Sunrise. The winner receives a plaque and $100 Walmart gift card.
