WITN’S Teacher of the Week: Elizabeth McCallister from Parkwood Elementary School

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - WITN's Teacher of the Week for November 15 is Elizabeth McCallister at Parkwood Elementary School in Onslow County.

Elizabeth McCallister teaches fourth grade at Parkwood Elementary School. She has been teaching for 30 years at the school, in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

McCallister has a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from East Carolina in Elementary Education.

She is also a certified Reading K-12 and AIG (Academically and Intellectually Gifted) and is currently working on her North Carolina Environmental Education Certification.

McCallister says, “What I believe about education is that it is ever-changing, and the students we teach are not the same from year to year. From textbooks to technology, and rows of desks to flex seating, the classroom is a different place of learning. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is educators facilitate the learning process with children. Oh, what a joy to do! I say I am a facilitator of learning. I have the unique opportunity to set the stage for learning to occur for example a PBL project or researching a topic and analyzing and synthesizing the information. That’s one thing I love about teaching."

She says she incorporates her own journeys in her teaching, including her trip to Yellowstone National Park or North Carolina State Parks to make learning fun and engaging.

She adds, "A successful day is one where I hear one of my students say, ‘It’s time to go already, really?’ or ‘Boy, this morning really went by fast.'”

The person who nominated Mrs. McCallister wrote: “She is a respected member of her school, the district, and our community. Mrs. McCallister has been teaching for approximately 29 years and continues to display a love for learning; both personally and for her students. Mrs. McCallister recently participated in training this summer to integrate nature and wildlife in her classroom. She has worked to enhance the Science Olympiad program at our school and is sponsoring the Science Fair. Mrs. McCallister continues to serve as a role model to other staff members and her students. She is truly deserving of this honor and special recognition.”

Congratulations to Elizabeth McCallister!
