PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - The WITN Teacher of the Week for Wednesday, February 7 is Felicia Martin from Lakeforest Elementary School in Pitt County.
Felicia Martin is a Kindergarten teacher in her eight year of teaching. She currently works at Lakeforest Elementary School where she has spent most of her teaching career. She currently serves as a new teacher mentor, editor of the school yearbook, school improvement team chair, and grade level chair. Ms. Martin serves as a clinical teacher for East Carolina University where she helps student interns learn strategies and skills so they become successful in the classroom. Ms. Martin is also a member of the Teacher Leadership Institute which is a program that fosters teacher leaders in Pitt County Schools through professional development.
Ms. Martin grew up in Wayne County where she attended Southern Wayne High School. After completing high school she attended East Carolina University. Ms. Martin graduated from East Carolina University in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in Birth-Kindergarten Education and minor in Business Administration. While studying in Greenville she fell in love with the city and decided to stay in Pitt County.
“I love teaching because it is just simply amazing to see how much my students grow over the course of a year,” Martin writes. “Most of my students come in not knowing how to write their names, or identify letters and sounds, but by the end of the year they are reading, writing short stories, and doing math equations. I also love being able to develop the whole child. I not only teach my students academics, I also teach them skills such as being independent, organized, respectful, and critical thinkers. These are all skills they need to be successful in life.”
The person who nominated Ms. Martin wrote: "She is a patient teacher who strives to be the best she can for her students. Every awards ceremony that I have been to at Lakeforest, her class has always had the most students receiving awards for academic success out of all the Kindergarten classes. She wants her kids to achieve and it shows in their grads and in their work. She always reaches out to me when there are things I need to work on with my daughter at home. And last year, she made it possible for my son to be the top AR reader of kindergarten for the boys. The top girl reader was also in her class. I think her hard work and love for what she does deserves to be rewarded!"
Congratulations, Felicia Martin!
