WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson may be mending fences in Africa as well as explaining Trump administration policies for the continent as he visits Ethiopia and several other countries this week.
Tillerson is the highest-ranking U.S. official to travel to Africa since President Donald Trump took office. His visit comes in the wake of ill feelings generated by Trump's vulgar disparagement of countries there.
Tillerson is scheduled to arrive in Ethiopia on Wednesday. He is expected to carry the message that the U.S. is committed to assisting Africa, but that prosperity and stability will be impossible until its security is brought under control.
Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, is under a state of emergency amid anti-government protests. About 100 protesters gathered outside Tillerson's Washington office the day before his departure.
