Tacks scattered along charity bike route cause flats for cyclists

NEW BERN, NC (WITN) - Cyclists participating in a charity bike ride in New Bern Saturday, not only collected donations but many also collected tacks in their tires.

Tacks scattered along some of the bike routes for the Bike MS: New Bern Ride caused flat tires for many cyclists, Greater Carolina National MS Chapter President Kristina Fransel said.

At least 130 riders had to stop and changes their tires because of the damage caused by the tacks, the Associated Press reports.

Nearly 2,000 cyclists were registered to ride in the event.

The ride helps raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and has been held in New Bern for the past 29 years.

Fransel says they don't know if someone intentionally scattered the tacks along the bike route but says they have told New Bern Police about the incident. She says this is the first year event organizers have seen anything like this.

"Overall it was a great ride," Fransel said. "This was a little wrinkle in the weekend, but overall the communities have been very welcoming to our organization."

Fransel says the event helped raise more than $1.4 million for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
