TROOPERS: Man on drugs hits Pitt County school bus head-on

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) - Troopers say man was on drugs when he hit a school bus head-on this morning.

John Cummings, Jr. has been charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving.

Trooper A.B. Smith says the crash happened around 8:15 a.m. on Arlington Boulevard and Stantonsburg Road. Smith says Cummings was turning onto Arlington Boulevard and hit the Pitt County school bus which was in a left turn lane.

A witness driving behind the 54-year-old Macclesfield man had called in because they said he was swerving all over the road, according to the trooper. About 15 minutes before his encounter with the bus, Cummings is accused of running off the road and taking out a mailbox.

The Highway Patrol charged Cummings with the mailbox crash, while Greenville police are investigating the accident with the school bus.

None of the students on the school bus were injured.
