The Duplin County school system says that several students were taken to the hospital to be assessed following a wreck.
Officials say that the bus from E.E. Smith Middle school was involved in an accident this afternoon on Highway 24 East just outside of Kenansville.
We're told that 29 students and the bus driver were on board at the time.
7 students were taken to Vidant Duplin Hospital to be assessed. The remaining students were taken back to the school where the school system's lead nurse met them.
Officials say that students parents were notified and that they will be picked up at school or taken by bus to their homes.
“We are truly thankful to God that all of our students and our driver appear to be doing well this afternoon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the driver of the other vehicles,” said Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan. “On behalf of our Board of Education, I want to thank all of the emergency response crews and law enforcement and Vidant Duplin Hospital who assisted this afternoon. Safety of our students and staff is always our number one priority. Our Transportation Department and other system staff did an excellent job with this situation. We are blessed in many ways.”
WITN has a call in to Highway Patrol for information on the wreck.
