Shifting gobblers cause 18-wheeler to overturn outside Mt. Olive

WAYNE COUNTY, NC (WITN) - An Eastern Carolina highway has reopened after a tractor trailer hauling turkeys overturned.

Highway 55 west of Mount Olive was closed in both directions for most of the day. It reopened around 3:15 p.m.

Trooper C.S. Grainger says the truck hauling turkeys for Butterball ran off the road to the right. The trooper said the shoulder was very soft and wet, causing the birds to shift and the tractor trailer to turn over.

Driver Jimmie Jacobs, 73, from Raeford, was charged with failure to maintain lane control.

The Highway Patrol says most of the turkeys survived the crash.
