GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Authorities destroyed more than 20 million dosage units of opioids and other prescription medications in a statewide collection of unused drugs.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said it delivered more than 13 tons of prescription pills to be incinerated on Thursday.
That total broke a record for Operation Medicine Drop, the statewide campaign to safely dispose of unused medications, which is held twice each year.
The program started in 2007 and expanded statewide in 2009.
Since 2013, the program has collected and destroyed almost 150,000 pounds of drugs.
