Raleigh distillery has option on old Kinston power plant

KINSTON, NC (WITN) - A Raleigh vodka distillery company has an option to buy Kinston's old power plant.

The massive brick building has sat unused since the mid-1970s and is at the end of Atlantic Avenue

City Manager Tony Sears says city council last night approved the option, which gives Isaac Hunter LLC 18 months to finalize the purchase of the plant.

The company has yet to release plans for the site, but Sears is excited this could be a kick start to revitalization to that area.

The power plant is on the edge of the city's Arts & Culture District, and Sears is hopeful the development will tie into the business district on Herritage Street.

The city manager said this is the first time anyone has shown serious interest in the power plant.
