JACKSONVILLE, NC (WITN) A major multi-million dollar road construction project in Jacksonville is currently in the planning phase, but Monday night the public got the chance to weigh in.
Western Boulevard is a notoriously busy and a notoriously dangerous stretch of road here in the east, but a new NC Department of Transportation project would make some major upgrades to the road in the interest of easing travel and improving safety.
Widening lanes, improving intersections and replacing turning lanes with a raised median are just a few of the improvements proposed.
According to D-O-T officials, the estimated $27-million project is expected to begin construction in early 2021 with the main focus on improving safety. But according to employees for the local Jacksonville government, they believe this project will actually be beneficial in other ways, including landscaping.
The expectation is that once this project starts construction will take about a year, though the D-O-T did say that timeline could change with a number of factors in the future
