Pitt County schools participate in International Walk to School Day

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Students in Pitt County are making strides toward safer routes to school.

Active Routes to Schools and SAFE KIDS Pitt County teamed up with the Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program at Vidant Medical Center for the 21st annual International Walk to School Day.

Students, parents and volunteers from three Pitt County elementary schools walked to school Wednesday morning to promote traffic safety, encourage exercise and build connections between families, schools and the community.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 40 children are hit by a car in the United States every day, causing more than 450 reported deaths back in 2015.

Nearly 500 schools and 250,000 students nationwide were expected to participate in the event, including students at Lakeforest Elementary School, Eastern Elementary and Bethel Elementary in Pitt County.
