Patheon selling Greenville plant as part of $7.2 billion deal

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) - A global merger worth billions of dollars, that was announced today, has a big footprint there in Eastern Carolina.

Patheon, which has 1200 employees at its Greenville plant, is being bought by Thermo Fisher Scientific, the companies announced today.

Thermo Fisher will pay $7.2 billion for Patheon, which is a U.S. drug ingredient maker. The deal includes $2 billion in assumed debt.

In 2014, DSM Pharmaceuticals and Patheon announced the new partnership. Around the same time the company announced a $160 million expansion at its Greenville plant.

Thermo Fisher expects the deal to be completed by the end of the year.
