Panthers pay tribute to Proctor with surprise, win over Riverside

PINETOWN, NC -- On most nights, the final score is the only thing we remember about sports. Who won and who lost? But tonight was not one of those nights at Northside High School in Pinetown.

Mike Proctor is the head coach of the Panthers boys basketball team and last December, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Over the last year, he's been aggressively fighting the cancer with rounds of chemotherapy and to prove he's battling back, he has not missed any time teaching, coaching or practicing.

This season, the Panthers are 11-2 and Friday, Northside was packed with people wearing hats, Caps for Proctor as they called it in support of Mike, who wears a hat for every game. Here's coach on what this tribute and surprise meant to him.

"One I get a lot of prayers from everyone around. That's my number one thing. Two, gets my mind off of what I am going through and I focus in on basketball and the school. It helps to make it easier. We have great fans and great support. It's a great place," said Proctor.

"We wanted to surprise Coach Proctor because of all he gives at Northside," said assistant coach Jared Adams. "Day in and day out, he comes in with a smile on his face even through everything he is going through. This is something to show the students and community how much we care about him just to give back."

In the game following the surprise, Northside beat Riverside 77-69 to move into a first place tie atop the conference standings.
