JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Jacksonville Police have arrested a 38-year-old man on charges related to the murder of his mother.
Police say they responded to a welfare check at a home on Marion Court around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. There they found 61-year-old Clara Kornegay dead inside her home.
Officials say Clara was hit with a blunt object and her car was missing from her home. Police say a neighbor last saw Clara and her car on Thursday.
Authorities put out an alert for the missing car and discovered the Carteret County Sheriff's Office had stopped the car on Friday. The victim's son, Shahid Kornegay was driving the car and was arrested by deputies on Friday.
After reviewing the case with the Carteret County Sheriff's Office and the Onslow County District Attorney's Office, investigators charged Shahid with an open count of murder.
Shahid is being held at the Carteret County Jail with no bond.
