ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WITN) - Onslow County has ordered immediate mandatory evacuations due to Hurricane Florence.
The county says predictions show they could be under hurricane force winds for up to 17 hours.
"Lives are at risk in Onslow County," said Onslow County Emergency Services Director Norm Bryson.
Evacuations started at 11:00 a.m. and are for the unincorporated areas of the county.
Richlands is also under a mandatory evacuation order, while Jacksonville says it is asking residents to voluntarily evacuate
Because no shelters can withstand Category 4 hurricane force winds, no shelters will be open in the county.
Residents who need transportation out of the area can call the Citizens’ Phone Bank (910) 989-5027 and register themselves and their families for transportation to pick up locations. Buses and seating will be limited, so this transportation will be reserved for those citizens that do not have transportation to evacuate.
