POLICE: Son murdered mother and man in North Topsail Beach shooting

NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WITN)- Police have confirmed the identify of a man and a woman found dead early New Years Day.

North Topsail Beach Police charged McKinsey Britton, 28, with two counts of murder after a man and a woman were found dead at his 8708 3rd Avenue home in the early morning hours of New Year's Day.

Britton appeared in Onslow County court this afternoon where he was given no bond and a January 22nd next court date.

Investigators say Britton told them he had shot two people when they arrived on the scene around 1:15 am Monday.

Police say the victims were 56-year-old Connie Britton, and 71-year-old Dowell Gray. Police say the woman was the mother of the suspect, while county documents show Gray owned the home. Police have previously confirmed that the suspect also lived at the home.

Two people are dead and a man is charged with their murders following an early morning shooting.

North Topsail Beach Police say that McKinsey Britton, 28, of North Topsail Beach, is charged with two open counts of murder.

Police say they responded around 1:15 a.m. to Britton's home on 3rd Avenue off NC Highway 210 in reference to a 911 call.

Upon arrival, investigators say they encountered a male subject in the doorway of the home who told officers he had just shot two people inside the home.

Officers secured the individual, then searched the home where they found a male and female dead. Investigators say it appears they died of gunshot wounds from a handgun.

In a news release, police say that Britton is a resident of the home.

Britton is scheduled for a first appearance on January 2nd.

The victim's names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Office is assisting with the investigation. The Surf City Police Department, North Topsail Beach Fire Department, and Onslow County EMS also responded to the incident to assist.
