GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Two non-profits are partnering to give free swimming lessons to children.
Ahead of the summer season, The American Red Cross is partnering with the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of Jack and Jill and ECU's Campus Rec and Wellness to provide free after-school swimming lessons to children from the Third Street Academy in Greenville.
Participants will attend lessons over the course of 6 weeks, run by trained instructors. The program focuses on drowning prevention with water safety instruction, swimming lessons and supervised playtime.
According to the C-D-C, drowning is the second leading cause of death from unintentional injury in children between ages 1 and 14.
