New report gives good and bad news for North Carolina smokers

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) - The smoking rates for our state were released Wednesday and there's some encouraging news.

The percentage of North Carolina adults who reported smoking cigarettes in 2016 dropped to 17.9 percent, which is the lowest ever recorded by the N.C. State Center for Health Statistics.

However, North Carolina's smoking rate remains slightly higher than the national rate of 17.1 percent.

Smoking is also the leading cause of preventable death in our state.
