MOREHEAD CITY, CARTERET COUNTY (WITN) - The Carteret County Sheriff's Office is identifying those involved in a murder-suicide that occurred in Morehead City Friday night.
Deputies responded alongside Morehead City police officers to a home at 1805 North 20th Street around 10:30pm where they found 67-year-old Benny Burney Sr. shot twice with a .38 handgun.
Deputies believe Burney's son, Benny 'Buddy" Burney Jr., shot his father before taking his own life.
Deputies say the horrific events unfolded in front of the wife and mother of the two men, who escaped the residence unharmed.
Deputies say Burney Jr. suffered from extreme mental illness and they do not have a specific motive for the crime.
In a statement, Chief Detective Major Jason Wank said, "the Carteret County Sheriffs office extends our deepest sympathy to the Burney family as they cope with this tragedy."
Deputies are investigating after someone witnessed a murder-suicide late Friday night.
Caretert County Deputies, the Morehead City Police and the Special Response Team responded to the 1800 block of North 20th Street in Morehead City just before 10:30 p.m.
Upon their arrival, one victim was found deceased and the suspected shooter had barricaded himself inside the residence.
When the Carteret County Special Response Team entered the residence, they located the deceased suspected shooter armed with a small handgun.
Officials are waiting until the next of kin has been notified before releasing the names of the deceased.
According to Chief Detective Major Jason Wank, the victim and the suspected shooter are relatives and both lived at the residence.
