Marine Corps testing water in Atlantic for chemicals

ATLANTIC, N.C. (WITN) - The U.S. Marine Corps is planning to test well water in the east to make sure Navy firefighting operations have not had a negative impact.

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point says the testing is being done out of an abundance of caution for private wells near Marine Corps Outlying Landing Field Atlantic.

They say it's being done to ensure drinking water supplies have not been affected by past Navy firefighting operations.

These tests are targeted to specific chemicals and will be free.

On November 8, from 4-7 p.m., the Navy will hold a public meeting to explain the sampling program.

The public meeting will be at the Atlantic Elementary School.
