CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WITN) - Marines have released the names of 16 service members killed in Monday's tragic crash in Mississippi.

Seven of the victims were members of the 2nd Raider Battalion at Camp Lejeune.

"It is a tight-knit community, made up of some of the most highly trained, dedicated Marines I have ever known," Marines Special Operations Command Deputy Commander Col. Stephen Grass told reporters at Camp Lejeune. "As a team, as a family, we're going to pull together to see this through."

The colonel added that they are grateful for the outpouring of support from the local community and "asks for continued prayers and support in this difficult time."

Grass said it was a "tragic coincidence" that Monday's victims were members of the same battalion that also lost seven members in a helicopter crash two years ago off the coast of Florida.

Previous Story

Camp Lejeune will announce the names of those killed in Monday's tragic KC-130 crash that killed seven local Marines and a Navy corpsman.

Colonel Steven Grass, Deputy Commander of MarSOC, will speak with the media at noon. WITN-TV and WITN.com will carry the noon news conference live.

Family members and friends have already released the names of many of the 16 service members killed in the Mississippi crash.

The plane spiraled into a soybean field about 5 p.m. EDT Monday, spreading debris for miles and resulting in fiery wreckage that burned for hours.

The KC-130 was assigned to a reserve unit out of Newburgh, New York and was taking seven members of the 2d Marine Raider Battalion from Camp Lejeune to training in Arizona. The plane had taken off earlier Monday from Cherry Point.

A Marine general earlier in the week had said it appeared something went wrong at cruising altitude. Brig. General Bradley James said there were two large impact areas about a mile apart from the crash and there is a large debris pattern.
