Pamlico County residents head for Wake County shelters

PAMLICO COUNTY (WITN) - As the coast continues preparations for Hurricane Florence, Tuesday a busload of people left Pamlico County for shelters farther inland.

According to officials from Pamlico County Social Services, 25 people were taken by bus to a shelter in Wake County. An additional 10 carloads of people followed behind.

Social Services will begin accepting people at the shelter they have established at Pamlico Community College starting at 5:00 PM Wednesday. The shelter has a capacity of 300.

Pets are allowed inside the Pamlico County shelter but must remain with their owner.

Due to Hurricane Florence, a mandatory evacuation notice has been sent out for residents of Pamlico County.

The evacuation order is effective beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11th.

Emergency management officials say the category 4 hurricane is a "very severe situation with impacts predicted to our area greater than Irene."

The county will be busing residents to shelters in other counties beginning Tuesday. Those needing transportation will need to be at Pamlico Community College located at 5049 NC 306 Highway in Grantsboro no later than 5:00 p.m.

Pamlico Community College will also act as a shelter beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials are reminding those possibly seeking shelter that there is limited space.

If you do plan on seeking shelter, emergency management officials ask that you only bring clothes, hygiene products, sleeping supplies and small personal items.
