AFFIDAVIT: Former ECU player believed murdered over drugs

RALEIGH, NC (WITN) - Court documents show that a former ECU football player may have been killed over drugs.

"Probable Cause Affidavit" and other documents obtained by WITN show that Raleigh police say that Anthony Domonique Lennon was killed after drugs he was having transported from Seattle to North Carolina by someone else were seized by law enforcement.

Lennon was shot to death in the parking lot of the Bahama Breeze on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh back on June 23, 2017.

The affidavit specifically states that the killing was set up by Ashanti Bennett, who is charged with murder in the case. The two met at the Bahama Breeze when Lennon was approached by two suspects and shot several times.

The documents say an associate of Lennon told law enforcement that the killing was over a large amount of drugs that was financed by Bennett and a man who goes by the nickname of "Mar", believed to be another suspect charged in this case, Jamar Allen.

The associate says in May, Lennon hired a woman to transport the drugs from Seattle to North Carolina, but during the transport, authorities seized the drugs. Raleigh police say they were able to confirm that a Raleigh woman was arrested in Chicago with a large quantity of drugs in the middle of May.

Police say the associate claims Lennon was killed over the lost drugs.

The document also cites cell phone records of Bennett, Clifton Spellman III, Jamar Allen, and Wantavius Jackson traced the men from the area of Bennett's tattoo parlor in Greenville to the area surrounding the Bahama Breeze in Raleigh at the time of Lennon's murder.

Police say Allen, Jackson, and Spellman then traveled back to the tattoo parlor after the murder. Those three men are all charged with felony conspiracy to commit murder.

Lennon played football for ECU from 2011-2014.
