WAYNE COUNTY, NC (WITN) - A Wayne County man is behind bars on a number of charges after allegedly stealing a woman's purse from a business, stealing cigarettes from a Dollar General and eventually leading deputies on a high speed chase that reached speeds of over 100mph on Highway 70.
Dennis Martin Jr., 37, was identified as a suspect in two separate crimes committed on Tuesday, December 5.
At 6:49pm Tuesday, a woman reported a white man stealing her purse while she was inside a local business. The woman chased after the man and attempted to reach into his car to get her purse back. When she did, the suspect drove off and dragged the victim for a short distance causing scrapes, bruising and minor cuts.
At 7:07pm Tuesday, Dollar General reported a man had stolen $245 worth of cigarettes from the store located at 3334 U.S. 13 South.
In both cases, Martin was identified as a suspect and deputies say arrest warrants were taken out against him.
Deputies attempted to serve the warrants and arrest Martin the following day, but Martin saw them approaching and fled in his car towards Highway 70 West. During the pursuit, deputies say Martin reached speeds of over 100mph and crossed the median to drive on the wrong side of the road. He eventually turned off Hwy 70 and crashed through a fence and gate before deputies eventually stopped Martin using a number of patrol vehicles.
Martin faces the following charges:
Felony Speed to Elude Arrest
Careless and Reckless Driving to Endanger
Felony Assault on Government Officer with a Deadly Weapon
Injury to Personal Property
Drive Wrong Way on Dual Lane Highway
Fail to Stop to Red Light
Injury to Real Property
No Operators License
He's being held on a $230,000 bond.
