Kinston holds Pay it Forward event for Harvey victims

KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) - Communities in Eastern Carolina remember all too well what it is like to rebuild after a hurricane.

That's why Tuesday evening local organizations in Kinston came together to talk about ways locals can help Harvey victims.

Kinston Mayor BJ Murphy organized this Pay it Forward event to bring the leaders of organizations like the Lenoir/Greene United Way, the Lenoir County SPCA, and the Salvation Army together.

Murphy says many people in the community have been asking about ways they can help Texas recover, so this event allowed the organizations to provide important links and information on the best ways to donate.

"Organizing, connecting people with a servant's heart to organizations that have a presence there and making sure we have a way to pay that kindness back to Texas," Murphy says. "Texas was kind to us during Matthew and we want to return that favor."

Kings BBQ will be donating 25-percent of their proceeds on Thursday to Harvey relief efforts.

Massay Motors is collecting items until Saturday.

The Salvation Army, Humane Society of the United States, APSCA, and United Way of Greater Houston are looking for financial support.
