NEW BERN (WITN) - Police have charged a man with this past weekend's murder of a New Bern man.
Willie Newkirk, 20, was arrested today for the murder of Travon Marlowe.
New Bern police say the shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday in the 1500 block of Beaufort Street.
Neighbors say after being shot, the victim tried to drive away, but crashed into a utility pole and street sign.
Newkirk is being held without bond and is due in court on Monday.
It was a deadly night in another Eastern Carolina city over the weekend and investigators need your help in figuring out what happened.
New Bern police say it happened around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, when they were called after a man was found shot to death.
Neighbors in the community say it appears the victim tried to drive away after being shot.
Residents in the 1500 block of Beaufort Street tell WITN they are still in disbelief after hearing about the shooting death of Travon Marlowe, 22.
One neighbor says family members called him, saying Marlowe had been murdered on their street.
They say Marlowe was shot just up the road and tried to drive away when he crashed into a telephone pole and street sign.
His car then stopped just a few feet away from one of the homes.
"He just told me there was a murder investigation going on right in our backyard and I was kind of in disbelief until I started seeing pictures and everyone talking about... I've lived here for seven years and never had anything like this happen," says Bryan Walston, one of the neighbors.
Police have not confirmed that Marlowe was found shot to death in his car or that he may have crashed on Beaufort Street, but do say that he had already died from his injuries by the time they arrived on scene.
From looking at that scene, you can see there are clear markings, like tire marks and broken street signs.
Walston says that while he didn't know Marlowe personally, that he is sending his thoughts and prayers to the victim's family and hoping police find who is responsible soon.
