Flooding covers Highway 12 on Cedar Island

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (WITN) - Parts of Down East Carteret County are already seeing the effects of Hurricane Maria.

Some six to eight inches of water covered sections of Highway 12 on Cedar Island this afternoon.

Emergency Services Director Stephen Rae says the flooding is expected to get worse during high tide.

Schools in Carteret County closed at noon today, while they are under a delayed start on Wednesday. Students who live on Cedar Island will have an optional school day.

After a full day of evacuations from Cape Lookout, the Cape Lookout Cabins and Camps Ferry Service in Davis is shutdown for now.

Maria is expected to brush by our coast later tonight and into Wednesday morning.
