First lab school for elementary school kids opens in Greenville

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - The ECU Lab School is the first of its kind for elementary school students in North Carolina and opened its doors Thursday.

The school comes from a partnership between the College of Education and Pitt County Schools.

The new school occupies a renovated wing of South Greenville Elementary and will accommodate 75 2nd through 4th graders.

Legislation passed last summer calls for eight UNC System schools to form lab school partnerships aimed at helping students with academic challenges to succeed.

"It's a new opportunity for us to try out the best practices and things that we do well," says Dr. Laura Bilbro-Berry with the College of Education. "And it's research based so that we can provide them with different opportunities that they might not have had in the past."

Western Carolina University also opened a lab school for middle school students this week, while the other six will open in future school years.
