Family foundation raises $34,000 for local nonprofits in memory of daughter

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Several non-profit organizations received a special gift Friday morning.

The James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House of ENC, Beau's Buddies Foundation and Riley's Army each received $8,500 in donations.

The donations are from another non-profit organization, called Team Georgia, which held a 5K race earlier this year to raise money for these groups.

Team Georgia was created by the Godwin family who lost their daughter, Georgia, to cancer and they say they wanted to give back to the organizations that helped them while their daughter was in the hospital.

"It means a lot to us," says Preston Godwin, Georgia's father. "We tried our best to help those who helped us. There are families that are about to start the process we have been through and anything that we can do to make their time better, because there is nothing easy about it. That's what we try to do."

Friday's donations totaled $34,000. Hudson Brothers Construction Co., who helped sponsor the 5K race, also donated an additional $5,000 to the children's hospital.
