GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - This weekend, hundreds of thousands of people are returning to the east to celebrate homecoming at East Carolina University.

Friday night, one organization is celebrating alumni members for their contribution to the university.

Six honorees are being recognized with ECU Alumni Association's 2017 Outstanding Alumni Awards and Virgil Clark '50 Distinguished Service Awards.

The Outstanding Alumni Award is the most prestigious award that the association awards to someone who has exceptionally excelled and is leading in their field or in public affairs.

This year's winners are Arthur "Art" Beeler of Franklinton, Sheilah Cotten of Raleigh, James "Jim" Newman of Raleigh and William "Bill" Rowland of Kinston.

The Virgil Clark '50 Distinguished Service Award is given to alumni who continue to volunteer and give back to the university.

That award goes to Valeria Lassiter of Columbia, Md., and the late Harry Stubbs IV.

Lynnette Taylor is a proud ECU alumna and was this year's emcee.

The awards event is held ever year during Homecoming.
