GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - It's an ECU tradition where some very brave souls jump into the outdoor pool in the middle of winter.
Thursday, Sports Director Billy Weaver once again joined in for the 21st annual Polar Bear Plunge at ECU's Student Recreation Center on campus.
He joined more than 1,000 ECU students, faculty and staff for a jump into the icy waters of the outdoor pool.
While the weather was great for late January, the water needed to be cooled down a bit with tubs of ice.
The event started in 1997 with 35 participants and has grown in popularity each year, topping 1,000 participants the last four years.
This year, the first 1,000 jumpers got a free t-shirt and a certificate.
