WATCH VIDEO: Dynamite possibly from the 1930s blown up in Nash County

NASH COUNTY, NC (WITN) - A box of dynamite that was found in an old tobacco pack house was blown up yesterday in Nash County.

Deputies say Everette Strickland called them around 10:30 a.m. after he discovered the TNT on his property on Highway 231 near Middlesex.

Strickland, who now lives in Raleigh, told deputies the property has been vacant since the early 1980s.

The 50 pounds of dynamite was crystallizing, causing it to become unstable. Deputies believe the explosives had been in the pack house since the 1930s as Strickland remembers his grandfather used it to blow up tree stumps when he was a boy.

Highway 231 was shut down for a few hours and the Explosive Ordinance Demolition Unit from Fort Bragg and the SBI Bomb Squad was brought in. They safely removed the dynamite from the pack house and then moved it to an open field on the property where it was detonated.
