UPDATE: Lightning likely cause of Duplin County church fire

WARSAW, DUPLIN COUNTY (WITN) - Fire officials now believe a lightning strike caused a Duplin County church to catch fire Saturday night.

The Warsaw Fire Department says after a preliminary investigation they believe the First Baptist Church off U.S. Route 117 was struck by lightning and caught fire around 9:30 p.m.

Multiple crews from Warsaw, Fasion, Calypso, Kenansville, Oak Wolfe and Mount Olive Fire Departments worked together to put the fire out.

One firefighter was take to the hospital for eye irrigation.

Officials say no one was inside the church when the fire started but they say the building is completely destroyed.

The fire is still currently under investigation by the Duplin County Sheriff's Office and fire investigators.
