RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The number of people who have died from the flu continues to spike in North Carolina.
The state Department of Health & Human Services says 34 people died last week from the virus, while there were 20 deaths the week before.
Included in the 34 deaths was a Bear Grass firefighter who passed away on January 28th. The number of deaths last week is the most for any week so far this flu season.
The state says the flu is widespread across the state.
To date, 140 people in the state have succumbed due to the flu. Of those, 97 were 65 or older, 33 ages 50-64, six ages 25-49, three ages 5-17 and one younger than five.
