Dixon High School student charged with assaulting school officials

ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WITN) The Onslow County Sheriff's Office says an 18-year-old Dixon High School student is charged with numerous offenses, including six counts of assault on a school employee.

Deputies arrested 18-year-old Durvell Walker of Maple Hill Thursday and charged him with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon on school property, assault on a government official, six counts of assault on a school employee and resisting obstruction and delay of a law enforcement officer.

Major Chris Thomas says Dixon High School had suspicions that Walker was carrying a weapon as he arrived to school Thursday.

Principal Steven Clarke gestured Walker to the side to search for the weapon - but couldn't find anything.

He says Clarke then moved Walker into the room closest to them that happened to be a weight room.

Clarke checked Walker's book bag and Thomas says that's when Walker rushed the principal and the SRO had to get involved.

Thomas says Walker did swing a weight rack at the principal and five other employees and hit each one but none required medical attention.

The SRO did use pepper spray to try to detain the student.

Walker was jailed on $9,000 bond.
