BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A member of Governor Roy Cooper's cabinet met with local students Monday.
Machelle Sanders is the North Carolina secretary for the Department of Administration.
The Beaufort County native and graduate of the former Bath High School met with students at Bath Elementary School and both Northside and Southside High Schools.
Her visit was in observance of American Education Week and members of the governor's cabinet fanned out across the state to meet with teachers and students.
Sanders holds a degree in biochemistry and encouraged students to embrace STEM subjects and to pursue higher education opportunities.
"It is important for our students to graduate from schools," she says. "Graduate from high school. And then it's also important for them to pursue different pathways for their future careers, whether that's at a technical college or whether that's certification classes or whether that's at a four-year university."
Sanders says quality public education and teacher pay are both important priorities for the governor.
