GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) In conjunction with Veterans Day events, ECU held one Friday that honors those with a more permanent tribute.
Thirty-seven new brick pavers were placed outside Christenbury Gym on ECU's campus Friday afternoon.
This is a growing memorial that was started five years ago, and now has 287 brick pavers.
Through the office of Enterprise Risk Management and Military Programs, families submit a name to honor.
According to Tim Wiseman, Assistant Vice Chancellor for the program, people don't have to be in the military to meet the criteria for this project.
Wiseman says, "This ceremony began for two reasons. We wanted to have something on campus to honor Veterans, in conjunction with Veterans Day to go along with the other ceremonies in the community and then we also have this idea combine that and dedicate an engraved paver on behalf or in memory of a family member or someone who served the country, or just someone you want to honor. There are people who have given the ultimate sacrifice, maybe died in the service, or others that had respectable careers, so each one is a small book and you read these things you hear the family members talk about them and it just creates a wonderful background for these things and weaves all together so nicely at this time of year, when we're honoring Veterans and those who serve.
The proceeds of the pavers that are purchased go to support cadet scholarships for ECU students that are in the ROTC programs.
