American Eagle flight from New Bern diverted to RDU after on board problem

RALEIGH, NC (WITN) - A flight from New Bern had to be diverted this afternoon due to a mechanical problem with the plane.

American Eagle Flight 5355 landed safely at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport around 3:45 p.m., some 40 minutes after taking off from the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport in New Bern.

Flight 5355 was headed to Charlotte. American Airlines says the flight was diverted after an indicator light in the cockpit reported the possible mechanical issue.

RDU says the Bombardier CRJ-200 landed safely and taxied to the terminal under its own power. The regional jet can carry up to 50 passengers.

American says it is working to get the passengers to Charlotte as soon as possible.

PSA Airlines operates the plane under the American Eagle brand.
