Woman records year of daily temperatures through crocheting

VIENNA, W. Va. (WTAP) -- At the beginning of last year, Mary Catherine Augstkalns decided to learn how to crochet as a New Year's Resolution.

Then after scrolling through Pinterest, she got more ambitious with her goal.

"I was browsing Pinterest and I saw this crazy idea for a temperature blanket which is where you crochet one row a day on a blanket for every day of the year. You change the color of the yarn depending on what the temperature is," she said.

And that's exactly what she did. Each day of 2016, she recorded the temperature at noon in Vienna, West Virginia and crocheted accordingly.

"I'd turn on Netflix and I just crocheted for a while I'd watch episodes of Parks and Recreation or something and crochet," she said.

Each month, she posted an update on her Facebook page and it slowly garnered support.

"It definitely helped posting on Facebook and seeing everyone's reaction month-by-month and people's reaction throughout town. It definitely helped motivate me," she said.

Now the 29-year-old has a more than 8-foot wide colorful blanket that she hopes can make it to the Women of Appalachia exhibition at the Parkersburg Art Center.

"I just really appreciate everybody who cheered me on and supported me in this because there were a lot of people who were interested in the project throughout the year, and I just really appreciate all the community support I've gotten," she said.
