ECU’s Family Fare announces six awesome children’s shows
East Carolina University’s Family Fare series will present five musicals, one traditional play, and an added attraction in the upcoming season.
The series is designed for children ages 5-12 and their families. All events are held on Friday evenings and last about an hour.
The season opens with Theatreworks USA’s musical “Dragons Love Tacos and Other Story Books,” which includes vignettes from “Interrupting Chicken,” “Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride,” “Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa School,” and other popular children’s literature titles. The troupe returns in the spring to present “Junie B. Jones,” a musical mashup of five of Barbara Park’s beloved books.
ECU Storybook Theatre presents two titles next season. In “The Wind in the Willows,” Toad’s obsession with motorcars leads him to ruin, but his friends, Mole, Badger and Rat, help him change his impulsive ways. The troupe concludes the season with “Really Rosie,” a musical production written by “Where the Wild Things Are” author Maurice Sendak with music by Carole King (Tapestry). It’s a hot and boring day in the city until Rosie’s imagination takes over in this musical adventure.
New to the series is Childsplay Theatre, presenting “Go, Dog. Go!” Based on the classic book by P.D. Eastman, the actors host a frolicking dog party that includes a live ball game with the audience. Vital Theatre, another newcomer, presents “Flight School,” a musical based on the book of the same title, in which Penguin needs some help from friends to learn how to finally soar.
These six titles form the Family Fare season and are available as a subscription at $54 adults and $42 children. Individual shows are available at $11 adults and $8 children. The performances run about sixty minutes without an intermission and are offered at 7:00 pm on Friday nights in Wright Auditorium.
Family Fare presents one added attraction this season, “Pinkalicious.” The musical production is suitable for children ages 3-8. Individual tickets are available at $11, $15, $18 and $23. Children are welcome to attend a spectacular “Pink Party” after the performance, at $25.
