Beaufort County Early College High School - Alex Amend

ALEX AMEND
BIOGRAPHY:
My name is Alex Amend and I attend the Beaufort County Early College High School (BCECHS). I live in Chocowinity with my mom, stepmom and my sister, Emily, who also attends BCECHS. This May, I will graduate as Valedictorian with my High School Diploma. In addition I will have earned an Associate’s in Arts and an Associate’s in Science. My interest in school has always been Science and Math. The STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) programs challenge me in a way that makes me want to know more about the world. In high school, I’ve been very active within the community through volunteering and other service-related functions. For example, I’m president of the LGBT Club at the Community College, I have volunteered for the Service Club at BCECHS, worked as a Fellow for a national political campaign, and was elected as a party delegate for my county. During high school, I’ve also worked part-time. When I’m not at school, volunteering, working, or spending time with family and friends, I greatly enjoy building and solving problems, so much so that I plan to make a career out of it. My whole life, I’ve wanted to go to NC State for Engineering. When I got my acceptance letter in January, I was absolutely thrilled, and since then I’ve been overjoyed about the thought of attending my dream school and getting busy changing the world.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR: Getting accepted to NC State, my dream school.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS: Working as a Mechanical Engineer for GE or a similar company.
WHO IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN YOUR LIFE AND WHY: The most influential person, to me, will have to be Crystal Crosby , my 7th and 8th grade Science teacher and advisor for Science Olympiad and Envirothon. She was one teacher who really pushed me and nurtured my interest in STEM subjects. The way she taught just made science fun.
I AM MOST UNIQUE BECAUSE: I continue to play with Legos, to this day. It is one thing that has cultivated my interest in building machines.

WHAT ARE 5 THINGS YOU VALUE MOST IMPORTANT AT THIS POINT IN YOUR LIFE:

IF YOU COULD MOVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD IT BE AND WHY: Probably Norway. I love Nordic culture and the countryside is beautiful when not covered in snow.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOUR CLASSMATES STILL DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU AFTER ALL THIS TIME: I have a substantial addiction to cookies. I can usually go without thinking about them for a while, but I instinctively grab a cookie from the jar in our kitchen almost every time I walk by.
WHICH YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL WAS YOUR FAVORITE: I’d have to say this year was my favorite.
IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND AND COULD ONLY TAKE ONE ITEM WITH YOU, WHAT WOULD IT BE?: A yacht.
